Vibrant Activity Centers

Cities and towns were originally built around centers that provided residents with much to see and do in a compact area. With walking as the preferred mode of travel, residents were able to exercise and socialize while acquiring the goods and services needed for daily living. Many such town centers still exist, and area local governments are hard at work to revitalize them.

In addition, nearly every city in the Kansas City region has older shopping areas that have seen better days. Local governments, working closely with the development community, seek to redevelop these areas to provide a broader mix and higher intensity of retail, offices and services. When successful, they create a vibrant center of activity for surrounding neighborhoods that boosts their attractiveness and ability to retain their value.

By mixing more types of housing — apartments, townhomes and senior communities — in and around such centers, they can also serve the greater diversity of housing needs expected in the future as the region's demographics continue to change. People can choose to live in the same community even as housing needs change with their stage of life.
