Conserving Resources

In part, we seek to reinvest in existing centers and corridors to conserve existing neighborhoods and existing infrastructure. But the more we can successfully accommodate the region's growth in areas that are already built up, the more we can conserve its natural resources — streams, agricultural land, air and natural environments.

Moreover, the more we can use nature's "green infrastructure" to cool urban heat islands, filter and reduce stormwater flowing into streams, and soak up carbon, the less we have to build and maintain the "gray" infrastructure — storm sewers and power plants — that the public ultimately must pay for.
