Relationship BuildingRelationship Building Certificate Program

Instructor: Ronelle Neperud

Can anyone be a leader? Are there specific characteristics, skills and aptitudes that only a few people possess that make them good candidates for leadership roles? From the first session of the Relationship Building Certificate program we begin exploring these questions and much more. Our consensus so far has been that everyone is a leader, because each of us has opportunities to influence, be it positive or negative. How one approaches those opportunities defines the character of one's leadership style and the long-term impact of the leader's contribution to society.

In this certificate program participants focus on building a 'sense of the future' by building effective relationships based on understanding their full potential and what it means to help others realize their potential. They also learn about creating 'places of realized potential'. This focus takes the participants beyond the popular concept of servant leadership in that they discover how they can be an empowering influence on others and organizations, thereby leaving a sustainable legacy rather than a large gap once they have stepped aside and moved to other opportunities.

Building upon the knowledge and insights from the Personal Strengths Certificate Program, the Relationship Building program, moves the participants into a deeper awareness of the impact behaviors can have on their ability to lead effectively. Distinguishing between 'challenging' and 'difficult' behaviors, not only of others, but themselves, provides new insight into how to deal with these issues and maintain productive relationships with others.

Dealing with conflict between people and within organizations is often the one thing that keeps many people from assuming leadership roles. Participants engage in discussions, assessments and exercises to address the impact of conflict on their ability to build positive and productive relationships within their organization. They also learn how to apply the TLC Model of Conflict Resolution — not the through a Tender Loving Care model but the Thinking, Learning and Cooperating model of resolving conflict!

One of the primary responsibilities of many community leaders is to recruit volunteers. The Relationship Building Certificate Program closes out its sessions with a surprising new perspective on recruiting volunteers. This perspective provides participants with a new paradigm for involving people through exploring differences between inspiration and motivation. Circling back to the 'potential building' paradigm of sustainable leadership, the participants discover influencing others to become involved in community is more about tapping volunteers' passion and needs rather than getting them to act upon the organization's or leader's needs.

Some things participants will take away from this program include:

  • The ability to create belief statements.
  • A leadership development plan.
  • Tools to help address challenging and difficult behaviors.
  • Conflict solution.
  • A volunteer recruitment plan.
