2016 Education Asset Inventory

Like other metropolitan areas across the nation, the Kansas City region faces challenges in educating a skilled workforce to meet employer demands. The demand for educated workers in the region exceeds supply. In the last 10 years, 40 percent of new jobs created require a bachelor’s degree.

A number of regional organizations and initiatives are working together to address this challenge. To have a significant impact on the regional economy — and on the quality of life of those who complete degrees — postsecondary attainment must lead to quality jobs in key industry sectors. In 2015, with support from Lumina Foundation, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) and GradForce KC conducted the first comprehensive inventory of educational assets in the Kansas City region for five sectors that are particularly important to the regional economy. Public/private partnerships align education with workforce

Talent-to-Industry Exchanges (TIEs) are replicable public/private partnerships that bring industry and education groups together to solve workforce challenges. 
GradForce KC introduced the TIE concept in 2016. This strategy was put forward as a KC Rising pilot project to address the alignment of the region’s education pipeline with workforce needs in specific industries.

The first TIE focuses on life sciences, a $9.2 billion industry with 38,463 jobs in the Kansas City region. This sector includes companies engaged in research and development, manufacturing, and bioinformatics. MARC’s 2016 educational asset inventory found a total of 459 life science credentials available at 34 public, private and for-profit colleges and universities in the region. Workforce Indicators monthly newsletter

MARC developed the Regional Workforce Intelligence Network to encourage greater collaboration among the region's workforce data and information professionals.

RWIN is a collaboration of economic development professionals, one-stop centers, workforce centers, community colleges and universities that meets on a monthly basis.
