MARCER manages the regional medical radio system, which allows emergency medical personnel in ambulances to communicate with all Kansas City area hospital emergency departments. MARCER maintains and upgrades the system to meet local needs and FCC licensing requirements. A major upgrade completed in 2012 will allow the system to operate through a digital 800 MHz wireless radio network.
The system allows EMS field crews from more than 30 agencies to communicate with Kansas City area hospitals. This communication with hospital emergency physicians is primarily designed to facilitate pre-hospital patient care issues and alert the hospitals to unusual situations, such as mass-casualty incidents or hazardous-materials incidents requiring decontamination.
