Sustainable policies are the framework that creates sustainable communities. Here are some of the policies the participating jurisdictions have adopted.
Independence
- Plans to implement a paperless system

Kansas City, MO

- Uses an environmentally preferable products procurement ordinance to ensure and facilitate the purchase of such products. (24)

- Uses best management practices for NPDES Phase II stormwater provisions
- Uses regional general permits and federal funding for I-35 fixed guide way project
- Includes bus rapid transit

Shawnee
- Uses green cleaning products
- Reduces city vehicles' idling?(26)
- Offers recycling in city buildings
- Adopted Sustainable Shawnee Policy in February 2008?(27)
