Parking Lot Requirements
Parking lots can have high costs for the environment. Regulations for parking lot design, whether that be the types of lighting, interior landscaping guidelines, or post construction runoff control requirements are essential to managing the potential environmental damages parking lots can inflict.
Independence
- All lights in parking lots must be either metal halide or LED (72)
- There must be at least 10 feet of landscaping surrounding the perimeter of parking lots, and at least 25 feet if the parking lot is five acres or more
- One tree and three shrubs must be placed for every 40 feet of parking lot perimeter
- Interior landscape islands are required for every row of parking spaces and at the end of parking aisles
- At least 40% of surface area must have live plant material with remaining covered with organic mulch
- At least one tree and three shrubs for every 20 parking spaces must be placed (73)
Johnson County
- There are currently minor requirements regarding perimeter landscaping around parking lots and requirements for landscaping within parking lots
- Allows Permeable Pavement (concrete, asphalt, pavers, etc.) per MARC Best Practices manual to meet post construction runoff control requirements?(74)?(75)
Kansas City
- Requires there be one tree for every five parking spaces and one shrub for every parking space (76)
- Requires all interior landscape areas be covered with ground cover (76)
Lenexa,
- Requires parking lots over 10 spaces and 3,500 square feet?to have (65 p. M):
- Multifamily projects: 10 percent of the total area must have interior landscaping
- Office, commercial sites, and industrial sites: 7.5 percent of the total area must have interior landscaping
Lee?s Summit
- Requires parking lots have an interior landscaping area of at least 5 percent of the total parking surface area
- Every fourth row must have a 10ft. wide landscape island (77)
- There must be an island at the end of every row (77)
- Requires tree planting areas not be less than 10 ft. wide (77)
Shawnee
- Requires at least 6 percent of the total parking lot space be interior landscaping?(71)
