With over 50 percent of 9-1-1 calls made from wireless phones and over 700 miles of trails throughout the Kansas City region, the need for better mapping of trail data is essential for maintaining public safety.
The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is working to create a comprehensive system which includes the use of GIS software, GPS location data, an unique address grid system, and locator signs designated with an address. This system will provide emergency services with more concise information, allowing for quicker response times. MARC is providing regional transportation planning, trail planning, mapping and multi-jurisdictional 9-1-1 coordination assistance. The goal is to expand this project to the entire nine county, bistate area.
Kansas City Regional Trail Safety Initiative White paper
To assist cities and counties in adopting this comprehensive system, MARC has released a white paper focusing on "lessons learned" from a Lenexa, Kan., pilot project.
