Sustainable Plans, Policies, and Practices
Government Practices
One of the goals mentioned in the White Paper was to “Lead by example.” Our partners have undertaken various projects to do just that. While this list is by no means exhaustive, it is designed to show some of the various strategies employed within the Kansas City region to promote energy conservation and efficiency.
Jackson County
- Monitors nine county buildings for energy efficiency and water savings
- Saved an average of $28,000 every year since 1998, not counting the saved maintenance costs, by using Trigen Chilled Water?(28)
Johnson County
- Inspects companies that are subject to the Federal Clean Air Act annually (29)
- Visits are not announced
- Educate company personnel to educate them on the regulations and why they are needed
- Hosted energy expo to provide home and building owners with information about becoming more energy efficient?(30)
- Offered more than 70 classes directly related to the application of sustainability, conservation, energy efficiency, weatherization, resource preservation, and Energy Star?
Kansas City
- Promotes the conversion of one million lights to compact fluorescent lights?(20 pp. F-3)
- Participates in the KC Climate Protection Partnership?(31)
- Headed the 10,000 rain garden initiative
- Gives away free mulch from their leaves and brush collection to residents on scheduled Saturdays at two locations (32)
Lee’s Summit
- Seeking proposals for assistance in developing a Community Environmental Sustainability Plan to serve as framework for future policy development centered on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
Olathe
- Participated in the FCIP program (33)
- Plan on retrofitting buildings to use natural gas purchased at a wholesale rate
- Will install programmable thermostats?(4)
Shawnee
- Used recycled rock from their aquatic center for rip rap on a trail project
- Created an event recycling program
- Installed solar lighting for a park that previously used gas lighting and installed energy efficient lighting with motion sensors and waterless urinals in park bathrooms.
- Built the LEED certified Justice Center & Fire Station 72
- Will add rain gardens, retention areas, bio-swales, and restored native vegetation on the Justice Center Campus
- Offers classes to residents on rain barrel making and composting
- Teaches composting and rain barrel making, as well as tree care and backyard habitats in NeighborWood program.
Wyandotte County
- Replaces all T-12 fluorescent lights with T-8 fluorescent lights as they die out
- Purchased three bicycles for government employees to take out for lunch and/or for the weekend.
- Encourages shorter distance travel for lunch and recreation with a list of local restaurants and attractions for all government employees.
