Green development policies help shape the future of our communities. Creating incentives for homeowners to implement green building strategies helps protect our atmosphere and pocketbooks.
Independence

Jackson County
- Offers Green Build Permit rebate program (45)
- They work with homeowners in the unincorporated areas of Jackson County to implement a variety of sustainable building practices such as:
- EnergyStar? appliances
- Green roofing materials
- Certified framing lumber
- Exhaust fans
- Air filters
- Built-in kitchen recycling centers
- The handbook gives reasons for the implementation of these and other practices
- By evaluating eligibility on a point-based system, it is easy for residents to choose sustainable building strategies that work for them
- Applicants may receive a maximum of 50 percent off their permit fee after being inspected by a Jackson County building inspector
- They work with homeowners in the unincorporated areas of Jackson County to implement a variety of sustainable building practices such as:
- Allow clustered subdivisions as a planned development
- Discusses with the developer the use of green development techniques such as:
- Ribbon edged streets with open swale ditches for stormwater retention
- Rain garden incorporation into stormwater detention design
Kansas City

- Issues a 5-percent property tax abatement adjustment if developer?s buildings are LEED certified
Shawnee
- Offers property tax incentives of up to 5 percent for LEED certification not to exceed the maximum of 80 percent exemption in (46)

- Gives financial incentives for energy efficient improvements in new home developments through New Housing Energy Conservation Grant Program?(47)
