Home Weatherization for Low-Income Families

Overview

The stimulus package contains a considerable expansion of the low income weatherization program. The program operates through locally designated entities and provides weatherization in an amount of up to $6,500 to families with incomes less than 200% of the poverty level.

Funding

$5 billion in total. These funds will flow from the Department of Energy to the states. It appears that states and local communities could get up to ten times the funds they normally receive.

Allocation of funds have been made and the states are in the process of determining program content and allocations.

Coordination with state weatherization programs (Missouri DNR or Kansas Housing Resources Corporation) or through your local program:

MARC's role

MARC is working with local governments, weatherization agencies, and the Metropolitan Energy Center to increase the capacity of contractors and laborers to perform the work. MARC is also encouraging coordination between agencies and with local government energy block grant programs.
