Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI)
Overview
The Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI) is a key competitive grant program that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administers to stimulate and promote economic and community development.
BEDI is designed to assist cities with the redevelopment of abandoned, idled and underused industrial and commercial facilities where expansion and redevelopment is burdened by real or potential environmental contamination. BEDI grant funds are primarily targeted for use with a particular emphasis upon the redevelopment of brownfields sites in economic development projects and the increase of economic opportunities for low-and moderate-income persons as part of the creation or retention of businesses, jobs and increases in the local tax base. Eligible applicants include any public entity eligible to apply for Section 108 loan guarantee assistance, CDBG entitlement units of general local government and non-entitlement units of general local government. Closing date for applications is June 16.
