Linking Environmental and Transportation Planning

As the Kansas City region develops its new Long-Range Transportation Plan over the next year, it will be important to evaluate transportation policies in the context of new regional goals and aspirations, such as the shared vision of becoming "America's Green Region."

Strong agreement exists among regional leaders on the need to better integrate environmental and transportation planning processes at the local, regional and state levels. An advisory committee is developing an action plan to transform transportation planning in our region in line with these newly-formed community goals and aspirations.

You are invited to join the conversation with internationally-known experts and learn about other related successful community efforts across the country. Be part of the process to change how transportation plans and projects are developed by participating in a four-workshop series:

Work Session#4: Linking Environmental and Transportation Planning: An Implementation Framework

Date/Time: April 10, 2009, 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Location:  MARC Conference Center, 600 Broadway, Suite 200, KCMO
Fee:  free, lunch will be served

What you'll learn:

This work session is intended for representatives of local governments, consulting firms, natural resource agencies, transportation/transit agencies, nonprofits, and others interested in making transportation planning more sensitive to environmental considerations. It will be particularly useful for those who have attended at least one of the first three Eco-Logical workshops and/or advisory group meetings.

During this session, participants will have an opportunity to review an updated Linking Environmental and Transportation Planning Action Plan, which will include feedback from the prior Eco-Logical workshops. Then, there will be a facilitated discussion to develop a strategy for moving this process forward. It is our hope that this final session will result in a final version of the action plan, including a regional mitigation framework and implementation strategy.

Please join this important discussion.

Outcomes:

  • A final version of the Linking Environmental and Transportation Action Plan, which will include a regional mitigation framework.
  • A detailed implementation strategy.

Facilitator:

Sheila Shockey, president of Shockey Consulting Services, LLC since 1998, has worked in the Kansas City region as a staff member and consultant for local governments since 1989. She has specific experience in developing new government programs; improving existing programs; securing new sources of revenue; complying with regulations; measuring program performance; developing comprehensive plans and educating and involving the public.
