City of Mission: Metcalf Avenue/Shawnee Mission Parkway Transit Improvements

City of Overland Park:Metcalf Avenue/Shawnee Mission Parkway Transit Corridor

Fact Sheet (January 2012)

Metcalf Avenue/Shawnee Mission Parkway Transit Improvements

The Metcalf/Shawnee Mission Parkway corridor received $10.7 million of a $50 million regional TIGER grant. These funds will be used to finance transit improvements along Metcalf Avenue and Shawnee Mission Parkway, which is an urban corridor network that is identified in the Smart Moves transit vision. The project will include: eighteen transit stations; two park-and-ride facilities; pedestrian access improvements along Metcalf Avenue from 87th Street to College Boulevard; pedestrian access improvements at Broadmoor and Martway; a transit signal priority system which will improve bus movement, timing and efficiency; and a transit center adjacent to Mission’s downtown.
Investments at park-and-ride lots will include monument signage, kiosks with route and schedule information, and digital displays of real-time, next-bus arrival information.

The traffic-signal priority system will allow transit vehicles greater ability to adhere to schedules by either extending green signals or shortening red signals when transit vehicles are behind schedule.

The Mission Transit Center will be located adjacent to Mission’s downtown area. It will support existing transit service as well as planned enhanced service, and future local bus service.

A pedestrian corridor, located along Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, will connect four of the enhanced stations. Amenities include sidewalks, crosswalks, bike-hike trails, and landscaping. Pedestrian and roadway improvements in the City of Mission, Kan. will be made at Martway and Broadmoor in the area of the Transit Station.

These infrastructure improvements, financed through TIGER, will make transit service more attractive to customers who currently use the bus; attract people who do not yet use transit; and connect transit to where people work and shop.

Specific details about the project are in the draft scope documents.
