MITIGATION STRATEGY WORKSHOPS

MARC is hosting a series of workshops to continue the successful implementation efforts of linking environmental and transportation planning in the Kansas City region. This series will develop a model mitigation process specific to transportation planning and programming, and determine how to implement it.

Each workshop will build on the information and direction arrived at in the previous workshop. Participation in all three workshops is preferred.

Above and Beyond Mitigation: Advancing the Eco-Logical Action Plan

  • Workshop #1: Applying National Approaches
    January 12, 2011
    8 a.m.–2:15 p.m. (lunch provided)
Kauffman Conference Center, 4801 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, MO 64110

Kris Hoellen, director of the Conservation Fund’s Conservation Leadership Network, will provide a national perspective on integrating green infrastructure into transportation and other planning processes. Participants will begin framing where advanced mitigation principles might be best applied in the Kansas City region’s transportation-planning process. Participants’ feedback will be used in the second workshop on Feb. 17 to begin developing a framework for optimizing mitigation project selection.

    Resources from the Conservation Fund:

  • Workshop #2: Optimizing Strategic Mitigation
    February 17, 2011
    8 a.m.–noon
Kauffman Conference Center, 4801 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, MO 64110

Will Allen, the director of strategic conservation for The Conservation Fund, will provide an overview on the latest trends for optimizing strategic mitigation projects. Participants will refine draft environmental criteria for mitigation projects which could serve as a piece of the optimization process. The application of the information developed will be explored in the third workshop in March 17.

  • Workshop #3: Strategies and Tactics for Implementation
    March 17, 2011
    8 a.m.–noon
Kauffman Conference Center, 4801 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, MO 64110

At the final workshop, we will explore the implementation and application of mitigation criteria and concepts explored in the first two workshops. Kris Hoellen with The Conservation Fund will join us as we outline action steps for implementation.
