New site helps consumers facing foreclosure

April 4, 2008

A new online resource for residents and neighborhoods dealing with foreclosures, www.kcforeclosurehelp.org, was launched in early April. The site provides contact information for local organizations and agencies that offer free foreclosure counseling services.

Many people who are experiencing financial difficulties don’t seek help until it is too late to avoid foreclosure — often because they don’t realize help is available or don’t know where to turn. “Nothing is worse than doing nothing,” said John Santner, regional director of NeighborWorks America. “This Web site can help connect consumers to people who can help.”

Approximately 10 organizations and agencies in the Kansas City area receive funding and support from the federal National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program to help consumers who are facing foreclosure.

In addition to connecting consumers with these agencies, the Web site has current regional maps, produced by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, that show 2007 foreclosures, sub-prime lending, changes in housing values, and projected 2008 foreclosures.

The Web site is a collaborative effort of the Local Investment Commission (LINC), the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and NeighborWorks America. LINC created and maintians the Web site; MARC works with local city and county governments on foreclosure issues; and NeighborWorks provides support and training for the counseling services.
