Congressional chair of Homeland Security Committee briefed on local work
November 5, 2007

On Friday, Nov. 2, local officials briefed three congressmen on regional homeland security activities.
U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II (Fifth District–Missouri) invited Rep. Bennie Thompson (Second District–Mississippi), chair of the House of Representatives’ Homeland Security Committee, to visit the Kansas City area to learn about regional homeland security initiatives. Rep. Dennis Moore (Third District–Kansas) was also in attendance.
"I was very proud to show off our region’s efforts to the chairman,” Rep. Cleaver said. “As homeland security funding streams are being examined, I wanted the Chairman to hear firsthand the good work that is being done in our region.”
Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee (RHSCC) Co-Chairs Hannes Zacharias, deputy county administrator of Johnson County, Kan., and Rich Noll, assistant city manager for Kansas City, Mo., provided background on the regional approach used in the Kansas City area.
Co-chairs of several RHSCC subcommittees also talked about recent regional activities related to preparedness, deterrence, response and communications capabilities.
Rep. Thompson praised the cooperation among regional officials and talked about the importance of continuing to let local communities make decisions about how to best spend homeland security dollars.
“I was very pleased to hear from the Kansas City region’s Homeland Security Coordinating Committee,” Thompson said. “The bi-state MARC region has been looked to nationally as a model of cooperation and effective planning. I believe Congress can learn a great deal from the work that is being done by MARC and I congratulate and thank them for leading the way.”
