Medical Reserve Corps of Kansas City honors volunteers

January 14, 2008

Unit Commander Susan Hoskins (at podium, left) spoke to attendees at the MRCKC's Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner.

At a volunteer recognition dinner held on January 8, the Medical Reserve Corps of Kansas City (MRCKC) announced that it has received a $5,000 capacity building grant from the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO). This is the second such grant NACCHO has awarded to MRCKC.

Formed in 2003, MRCKC consists of volunteers who stand ready to supplement the resources of the local public health and emergency management infrastructure in the event of a large-scale emergency or disaster. These volunteers are trained to work in emergency situations and to integrate into the region's existing emergency response system when needed. MRCKC is part of a national network of Medical Reserve Corps that operate under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Citizen Corps program.

Susan Hoskins, who serves as health services emergency response manager for the Platte County Health Department and has been unit commander of MRCKC since 2004, was honored at the event with a special award for her leadership and dedication. Charlie Bryan, MRCKC volunteer coordinator, announced that in the future this award will be named in Hoskins' honor and given each year to a volunteer who shares her dedication to the corps.

Another new award, the MRCKC Partners in Preparedness Award, was presented to two individuals: Captain Mark Owen, Platte County Sheriff's Department, and Barbara Hensley, Mid-America Regional Council.

Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the following corps members: James Lee Fleming; Carrie Ann Clymer; Susan M. Hoskins; Dalena Mae Braswell; David A. Foran; Lana Kay Davies; Judith Lee Tharp; Susan K. Scholl; Luisa G. Lotuaco; and Teresa Jean Smith.
