At the annual conference of the Missouri Valley Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (MOVITE), MARC's Operation Green Light program was awarded the Transportation Achievement Award. This annual award recognizes organizations for outstanding transportation achievement in the categories of operations and facilities. Ray Webb, manager of traffic operations, accepted the award.
Operation Green Light works to improve traffic flow and reduce vehicle emissions and travel time. Goals have been to coordinate traffic signal timing plans and communication between signal equipment across 20 jurisdictional boundaries in Missouri and Kansas.
The project built an extensive wireless communication system to 633 signals across the region to allow for signals to be better coordinated and respond to problems in real time. Of the 633 signals in Phase 1, nearly 90 percent are online and almost 80 percent have new timing plans during peak travel periods.
Benefits in specific corridors have resulted in a 21 percent decrease in travel times; an 18 percent reduction in fuel consumption; and a 15 percent decrease in emissions. Operation Green Light's real‐time computer systems allow staff to investigate signal problems and change signal timing without field visits. Analysts can also manage many problems in real time rather than waiting for a citizen complaint.
Operation Green Light also won a similar award from the Kansas City Institute of Transportation Engineers, the local chapter which won the "Best Chapter" award from MOVITE. For more information about these awards or Operation Green Light, contact Ray Webb at rwebb@marc.org or 816/701-8358.
