September is National Preparedness Month
September 1, 2007
The Metropolitan Emergency Managers Committee’s Citizen Readiness campaign will mark the fourth annual National Preparedness Month with a series of ads designed to encourage people to take personal responsibility for disaster planning by creating a supply kit, developing a family emergency plan and staying informed.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Urban Area Security Initiative, which provides homeland security grants to the Kansas City region, strongly emphasizes the need for citizen education and outreach. With support from the UASI program, the MEMC subcommittee on citizen readiness developed a Web site, www.preparemetrokc.org, to help area residents understand potential risks – from tornadoes to terrorism – and prepare their families to deal with disaster.
The group also involves citizens through several volunteer programs including local Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) and the KC Medical Reserve Corps.
Local governments are encouraged to take part in National Preparedness Month by registering for the 2007 National Preparedness Month Coalition at www.ready.gov.
