Safe Routes to School courses Nov. 14-16 will help
more children safely bike and walk to school

October 27, 2006

Communities across the country are seeking ways to make walking and bicycling safe modes for children to get to school due to safety, health and traffic concerns. MARC will host the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) National Course at three Greater Kansas City area locations November 14-16, through coordination with the National Center for Safe Routes to School and local partners.

Community leaders, school officials, health and transportation professionals, law enforcement officers, parents and neighbors are invited to attend the one-day course. It is designed to help communities identify barriers and create action plans to develop safe routes to school through strategies such as teaching pedestrian and bicycle safety, building sidewalks, working with law enforcement to slow traffic, and initiating walking clubs and contests.

The SRTS National Course was developed by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center through a partnership of funding from the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The course is free of charge, and lunch will be provided. Register by November 6, 2006. Course size is limited.
