Grant funds available for waste reduction, reuse and recycling projects

January 27, 2006

More than $500,000 is available to fund waste reduction, reuse and recycling projects through the MARC Solid Waste Management District’s annual grant program. Local governments, businesses, non-profits, schools, and individuals are encouraged to submit proposals by March 1, 2006. All projects must be located within the MARC Solid Waste Management District, which includes Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties.

The district identified six priorities for grant projects this year. They are: special venue recycling; glass recovery and market development; expansion or start-up of curbside or drop-off recycling; regional recycling facilities; public awareness of waste reduction and recycling, and the cooperative management of yard waste and storm debris.

Funding is not limited to projects addressing issues on the prioritized list. Education, composting, reuse, or research and development are all eligible to be funded through this program.

The grant program offers the opportunity to promote community and economic development and to address local concerns about public health and the environment relative to solid waste.

The district will host two informational sessions to share more information about the grant program and application process. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend one of the sessions — Tuesday, January 31, 2:00-3:30 p.m. or Thursday, February 9, 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the MARC offices, 600 Broadway, Kansas City, Missouri. Registration is preferred but not required. District staff is available to meet individually with applicants who cannot attend one of these sessions. Grant applications are available online.

Please contact Nadja Karpilow at (816) 701-8226 or karpilow@marc.org  for more information or for assistance with a grant proposal.
