Solid Waste Management District hands out 2009 awards

The MARC Solid Waste Management District celebrated its 2009 Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon on December 14 at the Gladstone Community Center. The event recognized the accomplishments of local governments and district partner organizations in the areas of recycling, waste diversion and sustainability efforts.

This year's award recipients included:

• Elected Official: Kathleen Rose, Mayor of Riverside, Mo.
• Public Employee: Julie Coon, Johnson County, Kan., Environmental Department
• Environmental Education: Cass County Sustainability Committee
• Innovative/Outstanding Program: Lee's Summit, Mo. - "Make it Green, Keep it Clean"
• Green Event: The Surplus Exchange - Community E-Waste Events
• Waste Industry: Town & Country Disposal - Material Processing Facility

Guest speakers included David Lamb, Missouri Department of Natural Resources Solid Waste Management Director, and Mike Utz, co-founder and principal of Ripple Glass.

The ceremony also recognized the 29 local governments that participated in the 2009 Recycling Challenge and honored the winners of the 2009 Clean Out Your Files Day competition, a one-day regional event held on Nov. 13 that challenged area cities and counties to recycle office materials including paper, cardboard, phone books and electronic media.

• 1st Place: Blue Springs, Mo.
• 2nd Place: Riverside, Mo.
• 3rd Place (tie): Grandview, Mo. and Mission, Kan.

Eight local governments diverted a total of 15.5 tons of material from area landfills.
