Bicycle and Pedstrian Safety Tips
Learning
to Share the Road with motorists
is an important step toward safe riding, but
there are other important safety precautions
to take when out on your bike:
- Always wear a helmet; it is one of the best things you can do to protect yourself on a bicycle.
- Inspect bikes for safety, checking brakes for responsiveness in case you have to stop quickly in an emergency. Keep tires properly inflated and monitor the tread.
- Carry plenty of drinking water and a snack.
- For longer rides, carry necessary tools and replacement inner tubes.
- Ride with a cell phone or remember to bring spare change for emergency phone calls. Also, carry current photo identification.
- Riding with other bicyclists increases visibility, and can be helpful in the event of an emergency or flat tire.
- Know where you’re going, and don’t ride longer than you are conditioned for, on unfamiliar terrain, or busy highways.
- Always ride with lights on at night.
