Share the Road TAsk Force
This is a regional coalition of safety-oriented agencies, including MoDOT,
MARC, Bridging the Gap, and the KC Metro Safe Kids Coalition. MARC views the
work of this group as vitally important and complementary to the work of Destination:
Safe. In this way, the work of this task force is seen as an extension of
our work.
The Task Force works hard to raise awareness of pedestrian safety. Recently, the task force has designated October as Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month and encouraged several communities to participate in “pilot” pedestrian safety events.
Local success stories:
- Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month, Oct. 2006 — Proclaimed by the Raytown City Council.
- Elderly and Disabled Pedestrian Safety Seminar, Nov. 2006 — A two-hour presentation for residents of John Knox Village in Lee's Summit.
- Distracted Daphne’s Disastrous Day, Oct. 2006 — A family ghost story relaying a pedestrian safety message as told by Deb Ridgway at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary.
- International Walk to School Day — fifth graders at McCoy and James Schools in Kansas City, Mo., learned about safe walking practices and viewed the educational video “Step to Safety with ASIMO”. This DVD uses the world's most advanced robot, ASIMO, to teach kids what precautions to take when crossing the street. This information was taught as a precursor to “Walk this Way” event.
- Safe Kids Walk This Way, Oct. 2006 — Blue Valley
Park hosted six safety stations for kids and volunteers to visit and learn
about various aspects of bike and pedestrian safety. About 80 students
attended. The Safe Kids Coalition is planning a similar event for the
spring that will include more parent education and involvement.
