Missouri’s first State Disaster Medical Team was formed as part of MO-1 DMAT in St. Louis in 2004. The second state team was established in Branson in 2005.
A new team is currently being organized in the Kansas City region. Kansas City’s Disaster Medical Team will deploy primarily in the state of Missouri and on occasion may cross the border into Kansas.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services provides financial support for the Disaster Medical Teams through a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).Some of these funds will be used to develop, recruit for, credential, train and equip the new Kansas City DMT. HRSA funds are also used to sustain and enhance the existing Missouri-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Teams.
To meet grant requirements, the DMT must increase the health care system’s ability to rapidly expand beyond normal services to meet the increased demand for qualified personnel, medical care, and public health in the event of bioterrorism or other large- scale public health emergencies or disasters.
