LEPC Public Information and Education

The LEPC maintains an extensive database of information about area companies with substantial quantities of hazardous chemicals. These companies update their information annually. The LEPC provides an annual summary of the data to each fire department and emergency management office in the five-county area. The LEPC also responds to requests for information from the public.

Brochures and a training program have been prepared to inform area retail businesses about safe handling and storage procedures for hazardous chemicals. A pocket guide to assist first responders to identify hazardous chemicals and take appropriate response actions was made available to every law enforcement officer in the five-county area. The LEPC is working with Kansas side agencies to inform the community about new federal Risk Management Program requirements. As part of this requirement, companies that use or store large quantities of certain flammable or toxic chemicals must prepare Risk Management Plans (RMP), with the goal of reducing the risks to the community.

The LEPC recently purchased a community education trailer that members may use as a public education tool at events in their communities. The trailer contains a variety of educational brochures and information, including a Level A chemical protection suit and a NOAA all-hazard alert radio. The trailer also includes a step-by-step trailer manual to be used before, during and after an event. For information about scheduling use of the trailer, contact Erin Lynch at 816/701-8390 or fill out the online request form.
