Course Description:
College and university campuses have become part of the front line in preventing, deterring and responding to violent incidents and criminal acts. Campus administrators are expanding their response capabilities and require an enhanced understanding of the tools for handling campus emergencies.

Campus and jurisdictional officials will:

  • Learn to determine the value of sharing information with community stakeholders
  • Understand the restrictions and constraints placed on various types of information
  • Identify an all-hazards approach to campus emergencies using the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS)
  • Participate in practical activities involving scenario-driven problems that facilitate discussion and decision making related to campus emergencies, including man-made disasters, natural events and acts of violence
  • Understand the necessity of integrated crisis and risk communication with all stakeholders

Prerequisites:
Participants should be familiar with their roles and responsibilities in emergency preparedness planning, response to campus emergencies and related post-incident consequences.

Testing/Certification
Participants will complete a pre- and post-test designed to assess mastery of the learning objectives. Those who score a 70 percent or better will receive a certificate of completion. Re-tests are available upon request.

Registration is open to emergency services personnel within the nine-county Kansas City metropolitan area: Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri and Leavenworth, Johnson, Miami and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.
