Clandestine Drug Lab Response
SPONSORED BY THE MID-AMERICA LOCAL EMERGENCY PLANNING COMMITTEE THROUGH HAZARDOUS MATERIALS EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS (HMEP) GRANT FUNDS

A clandestine drug laboratory (clan lab) is a laboratory that manufactures illegal, controlled drugs or substances and is an environmental hazard that can result in physical injury from explosions, fires, chemical burns and toxic fumes.
Clan labs can be found anywhere including homes, motel rooms, mini-storage buildings and motor vehicles among other places. These labs can escalate into hazmat situations, structure fires and odor complaints and require a fire or EMS response for burn or smoke-inhalation victims.
This eight-hour class will teach emergency services personnel how to identify and evaluate hazards at a typical clan lab. Participants will learn how to identify risks through scene size‐up, air monitoring and the use of appropriate reference guides. Entry teams will get hands-on experience using air monitoring and chemical characterization screening techniques to mitigate hazards and make safe entry.
This is an intermediate level training that will focus on site safety, entry issues and hazard identification. No equipment is necessary.
Training is led by instructors from the Environmental Protection Agency and Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
