About
EMS Agencies
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems vary from
state to state and city to city. There are a number of different
models for delivering emergency medical service care within the
Greater Kansas City region.
EMS systems include more than just ambulance services.
Emergency services usually begin with a 9-1-1 call, which is routed
to the appropriate Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). First responders
are dispatched to the scene, and, when necessary, patients are transported
to a nearby hospital.
First response
and transport services are also configured differently from one
community to another. They might include police officers, firefighters,
EMTs and/or paramedics trained in basic life support (BLS) or advanced
life support (ALS). The responders might be city or county employees,
employees of a private for-profit entity, or volunteers.
