Base-Year Land Use

Base-year (2000) land-use data, collected from local governments and other sources, forms the foundation for the "painting" process in Paint the Town and for all long-range forecasts.

MARC and the Technical Forecast Committee work with local governments to ensure that base-year land-use data is correct. Members are asked to review data for their jurisdictions and submit changes as needed. Base-year land-use maps should be available online soon.

MARC staff has matched local land use types to a regional classification system of “paint chips.” For the purposes of Paint the Town, the most important use of the base-year land-use data is determining which parcels have developed as of the year 2000. Chip-matching spreadsheets for each county will be available online soon.
