Paint Chip Subcommittee

The purpose of the Paint Chip Subcommittee is to define land-use categories, that adequately describe all of the land uses in the Kansas City region that are currently in place, or that we envision for the future. Each land-use category is assigned a "paint chip" or color that will be used to "paint" appropriate parcels and polygons on the regional map.

Each paint chip includes an assumption of a density of residents or employees per acre. In the Paint the Town project, when a parcel is “painted” with its planned future land-use chip, the size of the parcel or polygon determines the number of residents, households or jobs allocated to that area.

At this stage of the Paint the Town project, we want to include land-use chips that describe redevelopment and mixed-use development for the land-use scenario that assumes we will have a greater ability to adapt to the four fundamental forces affecting the region's future:

The forecasts rely on base-year and future land-use classification data provided by counties within the region. Because these classifications often vary by county, they must be reconciled for consistency across the region to map with Paint the Town. As a result, paint chip classifications must be agreed upon for every land use currently in place or anticipated for the future.

The latest classifications (January 2008) include:
