9-1-1 Mapping
MARC GIS maintains the primary map layers used within the regional 9-1-1 system. These layers include streets, city and county boundaries, and emergency services zones for fire, police and ambulance services. These layers cover the nine-county MARC region.
MARC
GIS began formal maintenance of the 9-1-1 layers in 2009 when it inherited
the responsibility from GeoComm — MARC’s long-term
and continued partner\consultant in the region’s 9-1-1 program.
The daily workflow used to keep the layers current is built on a well-established system of data sharing and record keeping established by GeoComm, MARC's Public Safety Program and the cities and counties in the region. All updates stem directly from information shared by local governments, or are approved by the affected jurisdiction before going live within the 9-1-1 system.
Each week, MARC GIS posts the updates to GeoComm’s
online data portal. GeoComm then uses an automated system to post
the updates to the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) throughout the
region where the data ultimately becomes available to 9-1-1 call takers.
