Mid-America Head Start Health Services
Health services within Head Start programs are focused on preventing health problems whenever possible by carefully addressing the needs of enrolled children. Head Start programs work hard to make sure that children have an ongoing source of health care that can be accessed long after a child leaves Head Start. Furthermore, Head Start understands that healthy children are more successful in school.
Federal Head Start Performance Standards require that all children receive health screenings within 30 days and dental exams within 90 days of starting school. When conditions are found, they are addressed quickly with the help of competent health care partners. If families need help, programs provide the resources and guidance to get them on the right track. Programs support medical and dental professional services for Head Start children and their families and believe that together they can improve their lives.
How we do it
- Promote Medical and Dental Homes
Many Head Start children don?t have their own doctor or dentist, instead visiting the Health Department for immunizations and emergency room when sick. Head Start helps connect families to medical and dental homes where children have continuous access to care. Additionally, Head Start family advocates assist families to obtain state assistance for health insurance. - Work with the Health Care Community
The Head Start Health Services programs bring members of the local health care community together to discuss ways to improve the delivery of health services to families. - Support Family Health
When parents are active in the health of their children, families reap long-term benefits. Head Start encourages and supports parents by forging relationships and providing information about available health resources. - Support Mental Health
Programs focus on enhancing awareness and understanding of mental wellness and the contribution that mental health information and services can make to the wellness of all children and families. - Encourage Good Nutrition
Head Start children learn about healthy food choices, and eat nutritious meals together in a family-style setting. Staff works with families to identify each child’s nutritional needs.
