Job Opportunity: Public Affairs Specialist

The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), the bistate Kansas City area’s metropolitan planning organization and voluntary association of local governments, is seeking a qualified individual for a full-time professional position in public agency communications. graphic design, writing, report editing, speech writing, special events coordination, media relations, developing website content and providing assistance to staff in planning community outreach and public involvement. This position is currently funded for approximately 18 months.

The following represents the essential functions of this position. Additional duties may also be assigned and be essential to the successful performance of this position.

  • Assist in the design of a public education campaign related to energy efficiency and energy conservation.
  • Develop printed materials to support public outreach and training program needs.
  • Prepare presentations for local officials and MARC staff to use with public audiences
  • Arrange for volunteers, local agency personnel or MARC staff to support public outreach events
  • Plan special events to promote energy efficiency and conservation programs
  • Prepare print and electronic newsletters
  • Prepare information to maintain agency website and energy program Web pages
  • Assist with the development of videos and scripts for presenters
  • Assist with program strategic planning process
  • Assist with grant reports and grant proposal preparation
  • Prepare fact sheets and attend meetings representing MARC on various issues
  • Assist in responding to media inquiries on programs and community issues

Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public affairs, or public relations plus a minimum of two (2) years related experience. An individual with public agency or nonprofit experience is strongly preferred.

Position requires excellent oral/written communication skills; strong customer service orientation; good graphic design skills; knowledge of Associated Press writing style; print production; ability to manage multiple projects under deadline; and ability to work with diverse groups as well as with contract writers, designers and printers. The candidate must have proficiency in the use of InDesign and Dream Weaver. Experience with public education campaigns and working with the media preferred.

Compensation

Annual starting salary is $36,340 to $45,430, DOQ, with comprehensive benefits package. MARC offers an attractive team-oriented work environment along with a competitive fringe benefit package.
