Green Label Evaluation: EcoLogo
Sponsoring Organization: EcoLogo is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 by the Canadian Government and is operated by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing. EcoLogo serves both Canada and the United States. EcoLogo researches product categories, develops environmental criteria for the category, and then certifies specific products that meet those standards.
Focus: EcolLogo covers a broad set of products and is also active in international eco-labeling efforts.
Commodities Covered: EcoLogo has set standards in over 120 categories and certified over 7,000 products.
Standards: EcoLogo develops product standards for a specific commodity using scientific processes and based on the life cycle approach. They generally design standards so that only approximately 20% of products in the market will meet the standards. Once standards are developed manufacturers can submit their products for certification. Each set of standards are available on their website.
Reporting of Standards: Certified products can post the EcoLogo on their products and advertising. All certified products are listed on the EcoLogo site.
Use of Standards: A local government can use the standards as a part of their bid standards, can require EcoLogo certification, or can use the certification as an evaluation criterion.
