Employment by NAICS Super-sector and Sub-sector codes (467k, updated 11/16/10)

Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly non-farm employment estimates for Kansas and Missouri (since 1939), the Kansas City MSA, the Kansas City, MO and the Kansas City, KS sides of the MSA from 1970 through September 2010, using the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Prior data were reported using the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual through the end of 2002, and may be seen in the data set Historical Employment by SIC Major Division, 1-digit and 2-digit Codes. 

Employment, Unemployment, and Civilian Labor Force (727k, updated 12/08/10)

Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly estimates of the labor force, employment, unemployment and unemployment rates for the states of Kansas and Missouri, the Kansas City MSA, the CSA, their component counties, and Douglas County, through March 2010.

Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly estimates of the labor force, employment, unemployment and unemployment rates for cities in the CSA and Douglas County with populations of 25,000 and over, through March 2010.

Business Patterns by County (2.45M, updated 10/18/10)

Total number of employers and employees, annual payroll for all establishments in each county of the Kansas City MSA (beginning in 2002, the 2 counties in the CSA, along with Douglas County in Kansas, are also included), and number of establishments by employee size.  The series is published annually and covers most of the country's economic activity, but excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.  Data are available since 1988 through 2008. Data for 1997 and earlier is tabulated by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.  Data for 1998 and later is tabulated by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.  A link is provided for accessing the bridge between the 2 classification systems. 

Business Patterns by ZIP Code (539k, updated 10/15/10)

Total number of employers and employees by employer size, plus first quarter and annual payroll for all establishments in each ZIP code for the Kansas City MSA, and starting in 2002, the counties in the CSA, and Douglas County, Kansas.  The series is published annually (available data here are from 1994 to 2008) and covers most economic activity, but excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.  Data for 1997 and earlier is tabulated by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.  Data for 1998 and after is tabulated by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.

Summary information about establishments, number of employees, and amount of revenues by major SIC division during the fourth quarter of each year from 1995 to 2009; summary data for establishments in business one year or less. Includes each county in the Kansas City MSA. This database contains known errors from the original data provider and should be used with caution. Whenever possible, other databases on this page containing similar information should be used.

Total full-time and part-time annual  employment estimates by industry by county for the Kansas City - Overland Park - Kansas CSA, its counties, Douglas County, Kan., and the states of Kansas and Missouri, from 1969 to 2007.

Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses in the Kansas City MSA (466k, updated 12/10/10)

Number of firms, employment and sales receipts for the Kansas City MSA and the CSA, their counties and cities with 100 or more minority- or women-owned businesses from the since 1969 through the 2007 Surveys of Business Owners (SBO). The SBO covers firms with and without paid employees. Firms with no paid employees are omitted from many Economic Census reports, therefore, caution should be exercised in comparing these data with data from other reports of the Economic Census. 

Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses in the Peer Metros (671k, updated 11/11/09)

Number of minority- or women-owned firms, employment and sales receipts for the Kansas City MSA and the Peer Metros from the 1997 and 2002 Surveys of Business Owners (SBO).. The SBO covers firms with and without paid employees. Firms with no paid employees are omitted from many other 2002 Economic Census reports, therefore, caution should be exercised in comparing these data with data from other reports of the Economic Census.

• 1969-2000 (762k, final updated 4/11/06) - uses Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.

Wage Surveys for the Kansas City Metro Area

• Kansas Department of Labor, Labor Market Information (LMI) (603K, update 6/20/07) - Wage surveys for selected occupations in the Kansas City metropolitan area conducted by LMI from 1995 to 2006. This survey includes only the Kansas counties of the Kansas City MSA (Johnson, Miami, Leavenworth and Wyandotte.)
• Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC)(497K, update 6/21/07) - Surveys for selected occupations in the Kansas City MSA, conducted by the Missouri Department of  Labor and Industrial Relations from 1996 to 2001. They were published by MERIC in cooperation with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) through 2005). For 2006 we use the BLS surveys.
• National Compensation Survey (1.7M, update 10/13/08) - US Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys for the Kansas City MSA for 1998 and 2000 through 2007.
• MARC's Annual Salary & Fringe Benefit Survey of Local Governments, 2009 - The 2008 survey contains information on 126 job positions from 59 participating local governments. The survey also has private sector salary information on 44 job positions. The survey is available for sale at a price of $350 for non-participating governments and $500 for non-governments.

Worforce Indicators (598K, updated 5/23/07)

Indicators on job creation, new hires, separations, earnings and other data since the first quarter of 2001 through the second quarter of 2006 for Kansas City and peer metros. Not all states have reported data (e.g., Omaha's Nebraska part is unavailable), and not all states report at the same time (some metro areas have data only through the fourth quarter of 2005).
