Business Patterns by County (2.72M, updated 04/30/13)

Total number of employers and employees, annual payroll for all establishments in each county of the Kansas City MSA (beginning in 2002, the 2 counties in the CSA, along with Douglas County in Kansas, are also included), and number of establishments by employee size.  County Business Patterns excludes business owners who were self-employed, employees of private households, railroad employees, agriculture production workers and most government employees. Information on businesses without paid employees is released as part of the upcoming 2011 Nonemployer Statistics report.   Data are available since 1988 through 2011. Data for 1997 and earlier is tabulated by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.  Data for 1998 and later is tabulated by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.  A link is provided for accessing the bridge between the 2 classification systems. 

Business Patterns by ZIP Code (546k, updated 10/15/10, corrected 5/10/12 - Missouri 2008 data columns misaligned)

Total number of employers and employees by employer size, plus first quarter and annual payroll for all establishments in each ZIP code for the Kansas City MSA, and starting in 2002, the counties in the CSA, and Douglas County, Kansas.  The series is published annually (available data here are from 1994 to 2008) and covers most economic activity, but excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.  Data for 1997 and earlier is tabulated by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes.  Data for 1998 and after is tabulated by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.

Summary information about establishments, number of employees, and amount of revenues by major SIC division during the fourth quarter of each year from 1995 to 2009; summary data for establishments in business one year or less. Includes each county in the Kansas City MSA. This database contains known errors from the original data provider and should be used with caution. Whenever possible, other databases on this page containing similar information should be used.

Employment by NAICS Super-sector and Sub-sector codes (278k, updated 10/23/12)

Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly non-farm employment estimates for Kansas and Missouri (since 1939), the Kansas City MSA, the Kansas City, MO and the Kansas City, KS sides of the MSA from 1970 through May 2011, using the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses in the Kansas City MSA (466k, updated 12/10/10)

Number of firms, employment and sales receipts for the Kansas City MSA and the CSA, their counties and cities with 100 or more minority- or women-owned businesses from the since 1969 through the 2007 Surveys of Business Owners (SBO). The SBO covers firms with and without paid employees. Firms with no paid employees are omitted from many Economic Census reports, therefore, caution should be exercised in comparing these data with data from other reports of the Economic Census. 

Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses in the Peer Metros (671k, updated 11/11/09)

Number of minority- or women-owned firms, employment and sales receipts for the Kansas City MSA and the Peer Metros from the 1997 and 2002 Surveys of Business Owners (SBO).. The SBO covers firms with and without paid employees. Not all states have reported data (e.g., Omaha's Nebraska part is unavailable), and not all states report at the same time (some metro areas have data only through the fourth quarter of 2005).
