Future
in Focus contest winners announced
Citizens
help “picture” the Kansas City region through photography
“Never Been Here Before,” a photo of youths gazing across the Missouri River for the very first time while stopped along the Riverfront Heritage Trail was recently selected as the overall winner of the Mid-America Regional Council’s Future in Focus photography contest.
The contest challenged area photographers to explore the character and places they value in the Kansas City metro area and what they envision for our future. Categories included transportation; natural environment; community vitality and diversity; and land use, architecture and urban design. The top photos entered in each category earned prizes such as a gift card for Southwest Airlines, stays in the Overland Park Marriott and new bicycles with safety gear.
The jury panel chose Kenneth Walker’s winning image because of its relation to the overall themes of Transportation Outlook 2040, the region’s new long-range transportation plan currently being developed. The photo incorporates multiple modes of transportation and a connection with the natural environment. The youths’ gaze across the river from a new viewpoint symbolizes both the next generation of our community and looking toward the future of our transportation system.
Residents young and old submitted dozens of images in the contest, including street performers, nature scenes, trains, revitalized neighborhoods, and major landmarks like Union Station, the Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Kansas City Zoo.
MARC will feature the photos in future print and Web communications about the new long-range transportation plan, Transportation Outlook 2040. Learn more about Transportation Outlook 2040 and view all contest photos at www.marc.org/2040.
