Safely dispose of household hazardous waste at a special event in Cass County on August 28

In coordination with the MARC Solid Waste Management District’s Regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program, Cass County, Raymore and Pleasant Hill will host a collection event on Saturday, August 28, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Cass County Fairgrounds, located on Hwy 58.

Materials accepted are paint, automotive fluids, batteries, lawn and garden chemicals and household cleaners. Because of their hazardous qualities, these items can’t be thrown out with the regular trash. No business waste or electronic waste will be accepted.

Residents of unincorporated Cass County, which includes communities under 500 population, Belton, Garden City, Greenwood, Harrisonville, Lake Winnebago, Pleasant Hill, Raymore and other communities in the Regional HHW Collection Program can safely dispose of their household hazardous waste at this special event at no charge. Up to 300 cars will be served.

A $75 disposal fee will be charged residents living in non-participating communities. To find out if you live in a participating community call (816) 701-8226 or go to www.marc.org/Environment/SolidWaste/HHW/hhwprogram.htm

In addition to Saturday’s mobile event, residents can drop off HHW at future mobile events through October and at two permanent collection facilities located in Kansas City and Lee’s Summit. To drop off HHW at the Kansas City facility, located just south of the Chouteau Bridge, call 816-513-8400. The Lee’s Summit facility is open April through November on the first Saturday of the month. The phone number is 816-969-1805. Appointments are required for the facilities but not for the mobile events.

The Regional HHW Collection Program offers a safe way to properly dispose of unwanted hazardous wastes and helps to protect public health and safety. For more information on this and other environmental programs visit www.marc.org/environment, or call 816-701-8226.

The MARC Solid Waste Management District administers the Regional HHW Program with funding provided in part by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and participating cities and counties.
