Help the region prepare for disaster response
Volunteer “victims” needed for training exercise on October 30
On October 29 and 30, first responders and medical personnel from around the region will participate in an Advanced Disaster Life Support course. This course provides training in mass casualty decontamination, use of personal protective equipment, essential disaster skills, mass casualty incident communications, and technology applications.
During the second day of class, October 30, participants will work with volunteer patients playing the role of victims to provide a true-to-life, practical experience in treatment and response. We need 50 to 60 volunteer “victims.” No prior experience or training is necessary — just your time and willingness to help.
The event will take place at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, NDLSF Regional Training Center, 1750 Independence Ave., Kansas City, Mo., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Volunteers will play the part of victims injured in a fictitious event involving a shooting and explosion. As a volunteer victim, you will be given specific instructions for your role. Some volunteers will pretend to be seriously wounded, which may involve using “moulage,” special makeup used to simulate lacerations or fractures. Others may be given a list of symptoms or basic vital signs to share with medical personnel, or simply play the role of bystanders. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and be aware that their clothes may get messy.
