Unplugged! Six electronic waste collection events scheduled

Six electronic waste recycling events are planned in the Kansas City region between now and November 14. All events are open to the public. Why recycle consumer electronics?

Cathode ray tubes found in most computer monitors and TVs contain significant amounts of lead while other equipment may contain mercury, cadmium, chromium and other heavy metals. When electronic devices are disposed of, these pollutants may pose environmental risks.

All electronics collected at these events are handled by The Surplus Exchange, a BAN certified e-waste steward (Basel Action Network – see www.ban.org) located in Kansas City, Mo.

“Local governments and civic organizations are organizing these collection events to meet the growing demand for the proper disposal of electronic waste” says Nadja Karpilow, programs coordinator for the MARC Solid Waste Management District. “We’re pleased to see an increase in events and to see the material kept out of the landfills.”

If you are unable to attend an event, The Surplus Exchange will accept material at their facility located at 518 Santa Fe, Kansas City, MO. The telephone number is 816-472-0444.
