Two electronics recycling events scheduled on Oct. 17 and Nov. 7

What’s the ‘E’ in E-waste?

The ‘e’ in “E-Waste” stands for electronic waste or consumer electronics. Consumer electronics are most often used in entertainment, communications and in the office environment. Some products classed as consumer electronics include personal computers, telephones, MP# players, audio equipment, televisions, calculators, and playback and recording of video media such as DVD’s, VHSs or camcorders.

Sometimes people consider items such as a toaster or a hair dryer to be electronics. While those do use electricity they are not classified as consumer electronics.

In the Kansas City area residents and businesses can safely dispose of E-waste. Upcoming events include Saturday, October 17, at City Market on 3rd and Grand streets from 8 am to 12 noon. Another event is scheduled on Saturday, November 7, in midtown, 51st and Oak streets, from 9am to 1pm.

Some fees apply to cover labor, shipping and insurance costs. No material is sent overseas. Computer monitors and televisions 19 inches and under cost $10. Larger televisions are $15 and consoles are $25. Also accepted are keyboards, mice, cell phones, printers, stereos and other electronics. Checks and cash are accepted. Please leave all original packaging at home.

These events are in partnership with The Surplus Exchange, a local nonprofit organization committed to the safe disposal of consumer electronics. The Exchange is open year round and accepts materials at its facility. The number is (816) 472-0444.
