Share the Road Safety Task Force encourages bicyclists and pedestrians to take safety measures at night
Three Easy Ways to “Be Bright at Night”
With daylight savings time in force again, the Share the Road Safety Task Force is raising awareness about nighttime pedestrian and bicyclist safety by encouraging residents to “Be Bright at Night.” Individuals biking, walking, or jogging during evening hours are easily visible to motorists. According to a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration 2007 report, 67 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night.
Pedestrians and cyclists can increase their visibility by taking three easy actions. These steps can often make the difference between arriving safely or incurring a tragic accident.
A visibility demonstration and light giveaway event will be held (weather permitting):
Monday, November 2, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Loose Park – 55th/Wornall
Kansas City, Mo.
Local law enforcement, elected officials, Task Force representatives along with joggers, dog walkers and cyclists will share stories and demonstrate the importance of being visible at night. The visibility demonstration will take place at 7:00 pm. Lights, reflective safety items, and educational materials will be distributed to the first 200 people.
The Share the Road Safety Task Force is a group of local government agencies, law enforcement, public health, community agencies, advocates and others who are working to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes and fatalities in greater Kansas City.
