Congress Makes April “National 9-1-1 Education Month"

March 26, 2008

In addition to being the month that honors dispatchers during National Telecommunicator Week, April is now also National 9-1-1 Education Month. The U.S. House of Representatives endorsed the emphasis on 9-1-1 education during the month of April in a vote Wednesday, March 12.

The designation comes at the urging of a number of public safety and emergency communications organizations including the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International (APCO) and 9-1-1 For Kids. These groups, and others committed to public safety, all plan on stepping up their national, state and local outreach and educational efforts during April. The goal of better education on 9-1-1 is to make children, seniors and the general public more aware of when to call 9-1-1 and the limitations of the system.
