Getting Around Kansas City

There are ways to travel around the metropolitan region other than driving single-occupant vehicles. Try carpooling or vanpooling, sharing a taxi, using public transit, or taking advantage of options for seniors and the disabled. These modes of transportation reduce the number of cars on the roads, which lessens traffic congestion, decreases air pollutants, and saves you money and commute time.

Buses

Kansas City Area Transportation Authority
KCATA's Metro bus system primarily serves Jackson County and parts of Clay and Wyandotte counties. Senior adults ride at half fare with a Medicare card. Call 816/221-0660.

Johnson County Transit
Johnson County Transit's The JO bus system operates within Johnson County, Kansas, and points in Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas. Call 816/221-0660.

Unified Government Transit
Unified Government Transit offers fixed-route transit bus service for Kansas City, Kansas. Locate route and fare information through the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. Call 816/221-0660.

Lawrence Transit System
Lawrence Transit provides transit service in Lawrence, Kan., averaging 1,600 trips per day. In coordination with Johnson County Transit, the K-10 Connector route now connects the University of Kansas in Lawrence with Johnson County Community College and the KU-Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Mid-America Regional Council's RideShare program is a free service designed to inform people about less expensive and environmentally friendly commuting alternatives such as include carpooling, vanpooling, bicycling, transit programs, and various employer services.

Special Needs (Elderly/Disabled)

Dial-a-Ride (Independence, Missouri)
Serves Independence residents who are at least 60 years of age or have a disability. Call 816/325-7399 for application information.

Dial-a-Ride (Kansas City, Kansas)
Service offered weekdays for Wyandotte County residents with disabilities. Call 913/573-8351.

The JO - Special Edition, GoodRide & EasyRide
Door-to-door transportation for individuals who are at least 60 years of age, have a documented disability, meet low-income guidelines, have special needs or who are making life transitions. Call 913/782-2210.

OATS, Inc.
A public transportation system serving the disadvantaged in 87 rural counties in Missouri. Bus schedules available online. Call 573-443-4516.

Senior Group Transportation
Service for senior groups in Wyandotte County on weekdays. Call 913/573-8351.

Share-a-Fare
Share-a-Fare serves people who need door-to-door transportation because a disability prevents them from driving a car on their own, or prevents them from using bus service. The service provides Complementary Paratransit Trips as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act throughout The Metro bus service area, as well as some other transportation services for eligible persons in Kansas City, Missouri. The Whole Person Inc.

Taxis

Checker Cab is the largest locally owned taxi service. It charters vans, contracts
services, provides paratransit and lift-equipped services. Checker Cab is available 24 hours a
day. To schedule a pickup, call 816/461-8400.

Yellow Cab provides 24-hour taxi service throughout the entire metro area. Call 816/471-5000 or 1-888-471-6050.

KCI Shuttle provides van service between Kansas City International Airport and area hotels. Call 816/243-5000 or 1-800-243-5000 to make a reservation.

Train

Amtrak serves between 400 and 1,000 passengers a day in Kansas City, making this the 62nd busiest station in the country, with three trains and four daily departures. Vanpooling

The AdVANtage Vanpool program is operated by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority. The AdVANtage Program provides FREE eight-passenger and 12-passenger luxury vans for commuting.
