The Academy for Sustainable Communities is a new training program presented by the Mid-America Regional Council. The academy offers seminars, technical workshops, roundtable discussions and other special events featuring nationally known speakers focused on how the Kansas City region can serve as a model of sustainability by emphasizing environmental, economic and social success. Wednesday, May 29, 6–8 p.m.

Neighborhood and community leaders who attend this two-hour course will be able to describe the basics of energy supply and consumption in buildings, transportation and city services, and witness a simple do-it-yourself analysis of utility and fuel bills. Participants will leave able to list which components of a building affect energy use and identify which building products have incentives, special financing, or tax credits that help cover the cost of purchase and installation. No-cost, low-cost and modest-cost improvements will be discussed and participants will learn to prioritize investments for energy efficiency.

Sustainable development has received a lot of attention over the last few years. Mixed-use, walkable communities that promote housing, transportation and life style choices are not only talked about, but increasingly being built all over the country. A built environment that supports healthy lifestyles has become increasingly important.

Local communities across the nation are integrating public health considerations into their community planning process. The workshop will allow you to gain an understanding of the relationship between public health and planning and evaluate best practices employed here and elsewhere.
