Last fall, more than 60 regional partners joined with the Mid-America Regional Council to secure a $4.25 million planning grant from the U.S. department of Housing and Urban Development. The purpose of this grant is to develop a model approach that local communities can use to create more sustainable places, including transportation corridors, activity centers and neighborhoods. Since launching the Creating Sustainable Places initiative, we've formed a Consortium Coordinating Committee that meets regularly to provide oversight and expertise. We also held the first Partners Congress in June, where 150 attendees provided ideas and solutions to help shape the grant’s implementation. Our second Partners Congress will build on that input to move into a more focused discussion. We invite you to attend the second Partners Congress on Wednesday, Aug. 10, to learn more about recent progress and provide your input on key issues. At this meeting we will update partners on the status of the initiative, review what we learned from the first Partners Congress, break into small groups for more focused discussion of key topics, and end with a panel discussion of the top issues identified in the breakout groups. We hope you will join us to help advance the vision of Greater Kansas City as a sustainable region that increases the vitality of our society, economy and environment for current residents and future generations.
