Phase IExecutive Summary (145KB, pdf)

Regional Commuter Rail logoThe Kansas City Regional Commuter Rail Feasibility Study completed Phase I (Initial Corridor Screening)of the three-phase study.

The Initial Screening examined the region's 19 existing rail lines. These lines were then divided into eight corridors and evaluated by the following set of criteria:

  • Ridership
  • Cost
  • Railroad considerations and constraints
  • Corridor-specific considerations
  • Federal Transit Administration New Starts Criteria

The screening process identified three corridors that appeared most promising, in the near term, for further detailed evaluation. The corridors were:

  • D - West–East from Kansas City, Mo.; Independence; Blue Springs; Odessa and Higginsville
  • E - South–East from Kansas City, Mo.; Raytown; Lee's Summit; Pleasant Hill; Harrisonville; Holden and Warrensburg
  • H - East–West from Kansas City, Mo.; Kansas City, Kan.; Lawrence and Topeka

In April 2001, MARC's Total Transportation Policy Committee approved the study to proceed to Phase II. This phase will make a more detailed assessment of corridors, D, E, and H using the criteria from Phase I.
