MARC is accepting applications for a new Planning Sustainable Places program to fund planning and demonstration projects that help advance sustainable development objectives. The projects will support the implementation of the Creating Sustainable Places initiative and Transportation Outlook 2040’s activity centers and corridors framework.

The program will offer funding to advance detailed local activity center or small area plans and supporting implementation strategies. It will support and position projects to move from planning to implementation. Earlier this year, MARC’s Total Transportation Policy Committee and Creating Sustainable Places Coordinating Committee co-chairs appointed an interdisciplinary group of local government and transportation committee stakeholders to help guide the development of the program.

  • Categories: (1) sustainable places plans, and (2) implementation activities.
  • Program emphasis: integrating multimodal transportation options, redevelopment and sustainable land-use patterns, and environmental stewardship through targeted planning and meaningful public engagement.
  • Projects require a 20 percent local match.
  • The maximum grant award is $150,000.
  • Program applicants who are not cities, counties or states must partner with a local jurisdiction sponsor.
  • Areas within MARC’s metropolitan planning organization boundary are eligible. Priority status will be given to planning projects conducted in activity centers within the region’s redevelopment area, and areas that include multiple opportunities for sustainable development.
